Herbicide treatment programmes
For most domestic gardens, a herbicide treatment programme is the most affordable option. A typical programme costs somewhere between £1,000 and £3,000, spread across several visits over two to three growing seasons. Larger or more stubborn infestations that need a longer plan can cost more. Herbicide is slower than digging the plant out, but it is far gentler on your garden and your budget.
Excavation and removal
If you need the problem gone quickly, for example because you are building or selling, excavation may be the better route. Digging out the rhizome and removing or burying it on site usually costs between £4,000 and £20,000 for an average garden, and considerably more for large or difficult sites. It is more expensive because it is labour intensive and often involves licensed disposal, but it deals with the plant in days rather than years.
What affects the price
Several things move the figure up or down: the size of the infestation, how deep and established the rhizome is, how easy the site is to access, whether waste has to be taken off site, and whether you need a guarantee for a mortgage. A small, isolated stand in an open garden is straightforward. A large infestation tangled around a building or boundary is not.
Why the cheapest quote is rarely the best
